Your life is a period that started in the past and is still running. Anything that happened inside it can take the present perfect, whenever it happened.
I've never been to Canada. Have you been there? Use been, not gone, when you are counting places someone has visited.
The same idea explains why superlatives take this tense: you are measuring against everything up to now.
